The International Institute for Management Development was established in January of 1990. It is the successor to two business schools that were previously independent. These were ImI, which was founded by Alcan in Geneva in 1946 and IMEDE, which was founded by Nestlé in Lausanne in 1957. The institution is known around the world as IMD, and it is the leading Executive Education provider for medium and large size international businesses as well as for individuals. Today the business school delivers the best in the learning that individual careers and global organizations need to build in the real world.
Put together, IMD is one of the leading business schools in the world. It has more than 50 years experience in the development of the leadership capabilities needed at every stage of the career of international business executives. Many of the participants on the program are from medium sized companies or large companies, most of them with an international orientation. IMD like to develop their relationship with IMD, moving from sending their managers on its programs to becoming a part of the IMD learning network, allowing them further learning advantages.
There are 52 full-time Faculty members, who are made up from 19 different nationalities. These faculty members are recognized as world authorities in their fields. They become so by dividing their time between carrying out research, teaching and consulting to many major companies in a variety of industries. What this does is to make sure that they stay on top of the latest managerial practice developments. This experience is drawn upon to create an effective learning environment highly conducive for the tackling of critical issues that face businesses today.
When IMD calls itself international, it means international. This means that the 5,500 executives that attend over 20 Executive Development Programs represent more than 70 countries. The diversity continues with the fact that 1,000 executives come from just about every sector of manufacturing and service industries, ranging from young managers who only have a few years of experience up to board members who come from major and world-class corporations.
The working language at IMD is English, but that doesn't mean that it is only the English or American approach to business and cultural background that dominates. There are more than 50,000 IMD alumni across the world who are based in more than 140 countries, and they meet in more than 40 alumni clubs worldwide.
The campus for IMD is found on the shores of a beautiful lake in Switzerland , right in the heart of Europe . It can be reached in 40 minutes by rail or road from Geneva which is the home of many global corporations or international organizations.
