Tips on Business Card Design
Business card design requires care and thought to make professional-looking cards that will catch your target audience's attention. You have approximately 3½ inches by 2 inches in which to make an impact so you need to make the most of it. Simple, eye-catching business card designs that get the message across are far more effective than trying to fit too much information on the small space available. The design should not be so cluttered that you can't find the information you need.
Usually a business card will contain a person's name, contact details, role within the company, company name and services. It is particularly important to say what the company does if the name doesn't make it clear what goods and services your company provide. Use of quotations or jokes can be another way of giving your card more impact but be careful not to take up to much space with this.
A distinctive-looking card will stand out in a pile of business cards. Design your own business card to create interest without distracting from the message you are trying to get across. Avoid trying to be too clever and designing a card that looks great visually but is not easily readable. You can use images as well as text to get across what your company does. If you use images they should be relevant and should add to your company's message, rather than distracting from it.
Aspects of business card design to consider are use of color, space, layout and shape. All of these can be adjusted for a different look and feel. The company name and logo should be clearly visible. If you already have a logo, then you can use those colors for designing your business card online. Color business cards are more expensive than black-and-white business cards but color can be used very effectively to make your card stand out. Text should be no smaller than 10pt to be readable. Using both sides of the card increases the amount of space available to you and double-sided business cards are becoming more common.
Business cards are usually rectangular and landscape. Following this format has the advantage that people expect it and business cards can fit in purpose-made business card holders or cases. However there are other options. If you want to go for something a bit different, you could have an oval card, a circular card, a square or any other shape you can think of. A business card shaped and designed like a football for instance would make an impact. You can take this idea and make it fit in with what you company produces. For instance a record producer may like to have a business card shaped like a CD.
