Filing bankruptcy in Minnesota

Minnesota adjusts their exemption list on every even-numbered year to compensate for inflation.

Minnesota allows federal exemptions to be used in addition to their state exemptions, or you may substitute the federal exemptions in place of Minnesota state law. These include:

Homestead - Property up to $200,000 is exempt, property for agriculture up to $500,000

Personal property - Furniture, appliances and household goods up to $7,200, Bible, books and musical instrument, burial plots, clothing, food and utensils, motor vehicles up to $3,200

Insurance - Accident and/or disability benefits, life insurance, police and fire benefits

Miscellaneous - Minor children's earnings, property of business partnership

Pension - IRAs, private retirement benefits, public employees, state troopers, state employees

Public benefits - Unemployment compensation, veterans' benefits, workers' compensation, crime victims compensation

Tools of trade - Farm equipment, including animals and crops, to $13,000, teaching materials for public school teachers

Wages - At least 75 percent of unpaid wages, wages of released inmates paid within 6 months of release
